The cruelties of war reach their limit in TAEGUKGI : The Brotherhood of War!

Professional Review of "TAEGUKGI : The Brotherhood of War"

Nearly five years after the release of his blockbuster hit Shiri, Kang Je-Gyu returns to the director's chair with Taegukgi, the big-budget war epic that took the Korean box office by storm in 2004. Taking its title from the South Korean flag, the film details the story of two brothers who find themselves swept up by the tide of war.

Believing that the future of the family lies with his younger sibling, simple cobbler Lee Jin-Tae (Jang Dong-Gun) works out a deal with his superior officer: if he wins the Medal of Honor, his brother Jin-Seok (Won Bin) gets sent home. But in order to take home the medal, he begins volunteering for increasingly dangerous missions, much to the confusion of his younger brother. Even worse, Jin-Tae's noble aim soon corrupts him, as he begins loving the idea of playing the hero a little too much. Eventually, his promotion to sergeant, the parties thrown in his honor, and the interviews with the media seem to go to Jin-Tae's head.

Taegukgi - Brotherhood of War is the highest-grossing film of all time in Korea and it is easy to see why. It's is big. It has battle scenes of visceral intensity to rival Saving Private Ryan, soaring orchestral strings and seething crowd scenes that make Gone with the Wind look like an amateur, suburban theatre production. Even the steam coming off an idling locomotive looks epic.

The core of the film is the relationship between two brothers, Jin Tae (Jang Dong-Gun) and Jin Seok (Won Bin), press-ganged into service against the advancing Communist Army. With early scenes showing the brothers? carefree life in Seoul, you just know that things are going to get ugly. And believe me they do. Taegukgi contains lots of explosions, visceral dismemberment and dying - pretty much in that order.

The full impact of brotherly love is shown in this touching Korean blockbuster that teams up superstars Jang Dong Gun and Won Bin. Its tale revolves around two brothers who are enlisted in the army by force during the outbreak of the Korean War in the 50's. Jang Dong Gun makes every effort to excel in his duties in order to achieve an early release from the military services for his younger brother (Won Bin). Unaware of his older brother's good intentions, the misunderstandings between the two involuntary soldiers keep on accumulating until the younger brother unintentionally comes across an un-posted letter to his family and makes a fateful decision ...

Breaking a new record in the history of Korean movies, TAEGUKGI devoured a production cost of $12.8 million. However, the expenses seem to have paid off well as it continued to become a week-long nationwide success selling no less than two million tickets in merely five days.

This version comes with a bonus disc that contains extras like:

  • Korean War documentary (approximately 42 minutes)
  • Extensive Making of material (approximately 53 minutes)
  • Interviews with Jang Dong Gun, Wong Bin, Lee Eun Koo and Kim Soo Ro among others (approximately 20 minutes)
  • Movie location documentary (approximately 49 minutes)
  • The Invisible People (Interviews with the movie's cinematographer, music director and sound supervisor, etc. (approximately 20 minutes)
  • Poster Gallery

Jang Dong-gun was honored as Best Actor for his role in TAEGUKGI : The Brotherhood of War and in addition, the movie also received the Best Technical Effects prize at the 25th Blue Dragon Awards presentation.
