CHAPTER 3
## Hyunjin POV ##
Im Taebin... he looks familiar... And seems a little weird. We carried on walking down the hallway and crossed a bridge to go to the other building. As we were approaching the class, more people looked and stared at us. Most of them were girls. They looked at Taebin as if he was a human god, and looked at me as if I was a freak. I got sick of the staring and malicious talk, so I said to Taebin,
“Can you walk in front of me or behind me? Just not beside me.”
“Why?”
“Are you blind or what? Can you not see people talking about me behind my back?”
“... What has that got to do with me standing beside you?”
“They don’t notice me unless something grabs their attention. Right now, you are the attention.”
“I can’t help it if I am attentive.”
“Just stay away from me.”
“What if I don’t want to?”
“Why? Because you like the attention? Well... you’ll get the attention even if I’m not beside you.”
“What if I want to stand next to you?”
I have no idea what this boy thinks about, and I don’t intend to know. All I want to do is stay low profile. In harsher words, I like being an outcast. I ignored his comment and went into the class. I went up to my usual seat and sat down. Taebin sat down beside me. As he sat down, the reactions of the other girls were so obvious; I didn’t have to look at them. Mr. Chung, our math teacher, started teaching, but the girls kept on looking back to Taebin. He pulled his desk closer to mine so he could share the text books.
Not being proud, or anything, but I am rather good at maths. I was able to complete the work Mr. Chung gave to us in 5 minutes, when it took everyone else 20. As I finished the work, I looked towards Taebin. He, also, has finished his work. I looked at his answers and compared them to mine. They were all the same. I looked at him with astonishment. He looked back at me smiling.
“Why are you looking at me?”
“Nothing... I’m just amazed at the speed you did those questions in.”
He looked over to my book and said,
“Right back at you.”
As we were waiting for the class to finish the exercise, I looked out the window and admired the birds. The breeze made the trees sway a little to the left, and a little to the right. I saw Taebin in the reflection of the glass. He was lying down with his eyes closed. I looked at the reflection, and his face became more and more familiar. I still couldn’t make out where we have met before. I was trying to think of where I have seen him before, when he opened his eyes. I was still looking at the reflection, when he opened his eyes. He looked straight into my reflection and asked me,
“Why are you looking at me again?”
“Nothing... I just think you look familiar.”
“Familiar..? What do you mean?”
“It’s like I’ve seen you before from somewhere... But I can’t make out where...”
“Haha. That’s a really common pick up line you know.”
I was getting angry, and was going to lecture him, when he continued his sentence.
“... But you don’t seem like the type who would use pick up lines to grab a guy’s attention.”
My facial expression, instantly, went blank. I stared at him and felt as if he was someone that understood me from my point of view. I was beginning to accept his idea of being a friend.
People in the class took a long time to finish the exercise that was set. I was looking out the window at the people on the streets of Seoul. It was interesting watching them. I saw a granny drop all her oranges, and had difficulty picking them up, when a young boy went up to her and helped her pick up all the oranges. Seeing kind people in Seoul made me smile. Taebin saw me smiling and asked me what I was smiling about.
“Nothing.”
“C’mon. You were smiling about something.”
“Nothing.”
“Fine. If you don’t want to tell me, fine.”
The feeling of beginning to accept his friendship was getting stronger. He knew when to stop asking questions.
Before we knew it, the bell rang. I was packing up my books when Taebin asked me,
“What do you normally do after school?”
“... Go home.”
“You want a ride?”
“.. No. I am very capable of walking myself.”
“I insist!”
At this, he pulled all my books and my bag from me and started walking away. I ran up to him and said,
“Give me back my books.”
He gave me my books, but not my bag.
“..And my bag.”
But he didn’t give it to me. He just kept walking down the hallway. We turned out of the building and were walking out towards the gate. As I was chasing up to him, eyes fell upon us. People started looking at the sight of me, Lee Hyunjin, following Im Taebin.
“Taebin, can you just give me my bag back?”
“No.”
We kept on walking until we reached the gates. The place where ‘they’ hang out. Then Taebin stopped and started talking a little to ‘those’ people. I got confused. Was Taebin part of ‘them’? I looked past Taebin and saw Jinhwan and Baekkyoung. He is definitely part of them. I recalled Teddy being his friend, and looked around for Teddy. There he was. Sitting at the far side of the grounds. I went over to Teddy, and screamed out,
“YAH!”
He took his headphones off and looked at me.
“What..?”
“YOU’RE A PART OF THEM?!?!”
“Who..?”
Tears started flowing down my cheek. One tear, two tears. I ran back to where Taebin was, and snatched my bag off him. I heard Teddy calling after me. Taebin didn’t know what was going on, so he asked me,
“What’s going on?”
I said to him in a hateful voice,
“I HATE YOU! I HATE YOU AND I NEVER WANT TO BE YOUR FRIEND!!!”
I turned around and ran off, tears still flowing from my eyes.
I ran up to my room, and banged the door shut. I covered my head with my pillow and kept on crying. The one person that I thought understood me, is part of them. This whole situation just reminded me of my parents’ death.
*Flashback*
---10 years ago. Hyunjin 7 years old.---
“Hyunjin! Run! Go! Don’t stay here!!”
My parents were captured by the region’s blackest gang, Death Gods (a.k.a. DG). They were holding guns less than 30 centimetres away from my parent’s heads. They weren’t trying to save themselves, they were trying to get me away to safety. I looked at them with tears in my eyes. I didn’t know whether I should leave. As I was backing away, one of those people said,
“Go die.”
And they shot them. My parents died in front of me.
*Flashback end*
I still remember the situation really clearly in my head. The sight of the blood, the voice of that man, the gunshot sounds. It’s still all there in my memory.
A few moments later, my brothers came home. They came upstairs to see whether I was back, and found me in the position which I was always in whenever I thought about that day. They came over to me and sat down.
“Are you thinking of that day again..?”
I didn’t reply. They left me to have a bit of alone time.
I recovered from my state, and started on my homework. I was so absorbed into my homework, I didn’t notice that it was already dinner time. Junyoung oppa came up to my room and called me down to eat. Junjae oppa cooked chicken pasta with crème sauce. One of my favorite dishes. I was enjoying my dinner, when Junyoung oppa asked me how was school. I answered him with an ok. I quickly finished dinner and placed my dishes in the dishwasher. I was on my way out of the dining room, when I remembered Teddy saying he moved. I turned and asked Junjae oppa.
“Junjae oppa, you remember Park Hongjun, right?”
“Yea. What about him?”
“Well... he’s in my school now.”
“Really?! I thought he was in Korea’s West Scholars.”
“Yea.. Well.. he likes to be called Teddy now.”
Junyoung oppa laughed hysterically.
“Teddy?? He likes the name Teddy?? HAHAHAHA..”
Junjae and I were looking at Junyoung oppa blankly.
“Anyway, I just wanted to tell you... That.. uh... Teddy is now..”
“Spit it out already.”
“He’s part of DG.”
Junyoung oppa stopped laughing and silence filled the room.
“What?!?! Hongjun.. I mean Teddy, is part of DG?!?!”
“Yea...”
Junyoung oppa got so angry, he wanted to smash him into bits. His expression was so threatening. Junjae oppa calmed him down and told me,
“Well... since he is part DG now, I don’t want you near him, or any of his friends, you got it?”
“Yea.”
I turned and walked back upstairs.
