Chapter 5
“What?” Jasmine shouted at the closed bathroom door. Did I misheard, she asked herself.
“Mr Jung is back – he said that he needed to discuss over the plans over the photo shoot…something, something along those lines,” Melinda replied on the other side of the bathroom door. That was Melinda’s way - ‘something, something along those lines’ in other words: ‘it’s none of my business’ or ‘I can’t be bothered to repeat’.
Jasmine just stood there in front of the reflection of herself in the mirror, wondering why he came back all of the sudden. She let out a loud sigh, “Tell him I’ll be out eventually,” she told Melinda, which was Jasmines’ way of saying “they can learn to wait’.
Jasmine quickly had her shower, dried and dressed herself. She was really curious yet anxious at the same time, as in why is he back here all of the sudden. She recalled him being hurried away by Lillian. She quickly blow dried her hair and braided it loosely over her shoulder. She took one glance in the mirror again and sighed to her reflection.
“If I knew this would happen, I wouldn’t have agreed to do this shoot,” she told her reflection.
Jasmine walked out of the bathroom and out to the living space. Melinda was there reading a magazine but as soon as she saw Jasmine walked out of the bedroom she pointed out to the balcony.
“He’s out there?” Jasmine asked in confusion.
“Yep – don’t ask me why. All he did was came in told me to tell you that he needed to speak to you and walked out there” Melinda said without looking up.
Jasmine looked towards the glass door that led out to the spacious balcony. She hesitated for a moment and before she could take one step, the door slid open and Eric stuck his head in.
“Well, it’s about time,” he exclaimed, “Care to join me out on the balcony? The view is rather lovely,” he asked her as he opened the door wider for Jasmine to walk out as well.
Jasmine made her way towards the door and walked right pass Eric. As soon as she stepped out onto the balcony, the door closed right behind her. Then all of the sudden, she felt his strong arms wrapped around her in a tight embrace – he was hugging her.
Jasmine just froze in her spot. He held onto her for about five minutes – not moving one bit. Then he started to hum the tune – the same tune six years ago, the same tune from the phone calls every few nights and the same tune Jasmine hummed herself to sleep not long ago. Jasmine still stood there without reacting to Eric’s embrace or his humming. She wanted to melt into his embrace but she couldn’t – her body wouldn’t let her – she wouldn’t let herself.
Eric stopped humming and whispered in her ear, “I waited for this moment for six years,” he turned Jasmine around to face him. He bent his head down to kiss her as Jasmine looked up at him and slapped him across the face.
She felt her face going red, not from embarrassment but from anger.
“What was that for?” he yelled at her.
“For breaking the promise you made to me six years ago!” Jasmine yelled back at him, “I don’t know what your intentions are but if you’re not here to talk about business then I suggests you leave!” she kept yelling.
“You’ve changed,” Eric said to her as he rubbed his cheek.
Tears started to form in Jasmine’s eyes but she refuses to cry in front of Eric. I hurt him, her brain cried out.
“You’re more stronger than I could remember,” he kept going, “I guess six years does do a lot to one person,” he said as he looked down to his shoes.
Eric always did that – when he felt embarrassed, he would always look down to the ground or his shoes. Jasmine shook her head to clear her mind – stand strong Jazz, she told herself. Jasmine refused o let her feelings overpower her.
“Don’t waste my time, what do you want?” Jasmine lashed out at him. Jasmine was beginning to feel impatient.
“What do I want?” Eric repeated her question, “I think we both know what I want” he continued on, “Don’t tell me that you don’t want this – us?” he asked Jasmine, staring straight at her.
Jasmine tried to avoid his gaze but couldn’t – he was right. Jasmine wanted this for six years but now – she feels nothing. She can’t even remember if she still loves this man from six years ago. The only feeling she feels is dread – she dreaded for this day to come and it has, almost like Judgement Day.
“Well?” Eric asked her impatiently.
“That was six years ago,” Jasmine said to him as she walked over to the balcony railing, “You had six years to come to me and you didn’t come,” Jasmine pressed on with her back turned to him.
“For six years I waited for you to come to me – you said you will find me and come to me but you didn’t,” she then turned around and face him. Eric could see from where he was standing that she is angry. He started towards her but she stopped him.
“Don’t bother trying to comfort me. I yearned for your comfort then but I don’t want anything from you anymore. So let’s just do our jobs and get the shoot over and done with so I won’t have to see your face or hers again,” she shot at him, “And I won’t have to see them either” she whispered.
Eric understood what he meant by ‘her’ – Lillian. He also understood what he meant by ‘them’ – Jasmine’s father and step-mother.
He watched Jasmine make her way back into the penthouse but he called after her.
“Don’t go – not yet” he called out to her.
Jasmine stopped in her tracks. She was about to turn to him when she heard his phone ring and cursed underneath his breath. That gave Jasmine the impression that Lillian is calling him.
“Just go to her – and stop wasting my time,” Jasmine said over her shoulder and she opened the door. Before she stepped inside to tell Melinda to see Eric out of the penthouse she turned to him.
“FYI – I know she’s your fiancée” and with that she walked inside, leaving him standing there cursing at himself.
