Chapter 1~*
I woke up to my alarm clock buzz. I searched, with my eyes closed, for the snooze button. I failed to find it and just slowly opened my eyes.
I waited for my eyes to adjust to the dark. 6:30, the clock read. Finally! The first day of school!!! I just moved here a week ago from San Francisco. CA to Seoul, Korea, where my mom’s older sister lived.
I stood up from my bed and slipped into my slippers. As I rubbed my eyes, I walked into the kitchen.
My mom was off to work as usual so I prepared my breakfast. I put some cereal into my bowl and poured milk in it. I ate it fast, in about 5 minutes or so, and ran upstairs. I took a quick shower and dried my hair. I decided to straighten my hair.
I checked the time and it was 7:10 already. I quickly picked up my backpack and walked out my front doors. I locked the front doors and cut through my green grass. I finally arrived at my school around 7:25.
This is it, I thought and opened the door. Right away I ran into a tall girl with long blond died hair, with two other girls. The tall girl, who was standing between the other two, was probably the leader of this group. She was wearing a pink tank top that was basically a bikini top, and was wearing a short black mini skirt. The girl to the left had the middle height and had curly brown hair. It had blond highlights in it. I do admit….it was pretty. She was wearing basically the same thing as the first girl but had a red tank top on. The girl to the right was the shortest. She kept her black hair the way it was but had highlights in it. Her hair was cut into a short hair style that shaped her face into more of an oval shape. She was also wearing the same outfit as the others but had a white tank top on. They were all wearing black 3-inch high heels.
Do they even have a dress code here?
Then the one in the middle spoke.
“So you’re the new girl I’ve been hearing about. Hey,” She said. Loud enough for the people at least 20 feet away could hear. Everyone in the crowded hallways shut their mouths and looked our way.
I didn’t want to look like a freak to a girl who was probably the popularest girl in school, so I flashed a smile.
“Hey” I said. “And yeah, that’s me…the new girl I guess.” Now even the teachers standing outside their doors were staring and listening.
“What’s your name?” The girl asked.
“Jaimie” I replied.
“Hi, Jaimie. I’m Jessica. This is Jenn and Jade." Jessica said as she pointed at the girl to her left and right.
“Hey” Jenn and Jade said in unison. They exchanged glances and giggled.
“Ignore them.” Jessica said as she rolled her eyes.
Then, a guy passed by and Jessica looked towards him.
“Hey, Hyunjoong!!” Jessica said, as she waved her hand at him.
“Hey” Hyunjoong said in an annoyed voice. He just shook his head as he walked away.
“OMG, Jessica! He totally checked you out!!” Jenn whispered.
“Totally. Did you see how he stared at you?” Jade agreed in a whispered voice. Jessica smiled.
This is messed up, I thought as I stared at Hyunjoong. He is hot…
“Hmph….He definitely has good taste in girls, don’t you think?” Jessica said and acted like she was checking her nail polish. Then, she ordered me to follow her with her hand motion.
She took me to her locker. The hallway was empty. Jessica opened up her locker and took out a little jewelry box. She handed it to me and I could tell she wanted me to open it. When I did, necklaces, rings, bracelets and etc. fell out. I gasped and the word “sorry” escaped my mouth.
“OMG, Jessica! She dropped your precious jewelry!!” Jenn yelled and made a fake surprised face. Jade shook her head.
Jessica just gave me a look and I quickly understood. I reached down and picked up the littlest earring and stood back up. I saw Jenn and Jade were about to crack up.
“You should be more careful with things that are worth a lot.” Jessica said.
I noticed the sharp, sarcasm in her voice. Also I noticed that she was not that nice person I just met when she was not around lots of people.
“We are going to ask you-” Jade started, but Jessica finished it for her. “to join our group.” Jenn just nodded.
“Why?” I asked. I didn’t want to wear small, tight tank tops and mini skirts with 3-inch high heels. “You don’t even know me that much.”
“Well, we do this to every new girl with a name that starts with a “J” that comes to our school. It’s a tradition. Right Jade, Jenn?” Jessica asked as if I needed proof that it was true.
“Am I supposed to say yes?” I asked. Then I quickly regretted saying that. She probably thinks I'm not suitable to be one of them.
“Yeah, you are.” Jade said. Jessica rolled her eyes once again and Jenn giggled.
“Then sure. Why not?” I said and gave them my not-even-close-to-Jessica’s smile.
“Okay then, you’re in. But first, you have to take something from that box. You have to wear it every single day and never forget. Because if you do forget, you’re not going to be able to hang out with us. And trust me, you want to.” Jessica said. As she showed off her humongous diamond ring on her left ring finger. Jenn showed me her silver anklet with diamond studs and Jade showed me her star shaped silver earring in her right, second earring hole. She was wearing big silver hoops in the first earring holes.
I nodded and reopened the box carefully. A little silver necklace with a diamond heart caught my eye. I quickly picked it up and stared at it in amaze.
“Guess that’s your choice.” Jessica said.
“Remember,” started Jade, “you have to wear it every single day.”
“Unless, we decide you’re not part of us.” Jenn said, with a harsh tone.
“Okay,” I said, “I won’t forget.”
Jessica, Jenn, and Jade walked away doing their “walk”.
I checked my watch and it read 7:48. Class starts in two minutes! I quickly ran to my locker which was close by, and took out my History book and notebook. I shoved my backpack into my locker and looked left and right. No one was out in the hall but me. I turned right and ran into someone-big.
“Shouldn’t you be in class young lady?” The big guy said. I looked up. It turns out that he was the principal of this place.
“Sorry, but I just moved to Seoul. I’m from America.” The principal frowned and shoot out his hand for a handshake. I shook it very lightly.
“Then, welcome. Welcome to the great Seoul Middle school. I’m Mr. Song.”
“Nice to meet you, Mr. Song,” I said with a smile. “Can you help me find my class? It’s room 201.”
“Sure thing. And your name is…..” He said, as he wondered off.
“Ja-” I tried to tell him, but Mr. Song stopped me.
“Jaimie Kim! Your class is just around the corner.” He said, as he pointed to my left corner.
“Thank you, Mr. Song.” I said and walked toward the corner. There it is: Room 201. My first class in Seoul Middle School and I’m already late!
I quietly opened the door and tried to make no noise. But I accidentally dropped my book which drew every girls and boys to lift their sight from their History books. The teacher, who was very short and chubby, turned from the board towards me. Her name was written hastily on the board—Mrs. Noh.
“You’re late.” She frowned as she said it.
“I’m sorry,” I started, “I’m new to this school.”
“Excuses, excuses. I don’t care. Now go take a seat, page 29.
“Yes Mrs. Noh,” I said in a voice only a mouse can hear.
I looked around the classroom to find a place to sit. I saw Jessica, Jenn and Jade sitting in a corner in the back of the room. I saw no empty seats next to them but there was one right in front so I sat there. Everyone’s eyes were still on me. About ten seconds passed, and everyone just started talking. Mrs. Noh sighed and looked around. She looked like she was going to have a break down, and the school day had just started!
“Okay class! Back to your books!” Mrs. Noh screeched and the room settled down instantly. “And what is that horrible smell?!”
I smelled it too. In fact, it was coming from right behind me—Jessica, Jenn and Jade. I turned around and saw that they were doing each others’ nails. Mrs. Noh looked toward them too. Once she knew what was going on, she blew up.
“Unacceptable! You three! Go out in the hall. Now!” Mrs. Noh yelled.
The three girls just stared at her like she was crazy, then Jessica spoke up--as always.
“It was Jaimie. She gave these to us.” Jessica said, holding up about 5 nail polishes. Red, hot pink, black, white, and sparkle.
Whoa. When did I do that??
“Yeah,” Jade picked up from where Jessica left off. “She gave them to us and told us to keep them. She didn’t want to get in trouble for bringing them to class. Everyone knows that nail polishes are forbidden in this class. Right everyone?” Jade said, with her winning smile, just not as perfect as Jessica’s.
Most nodded, but some just shook their heads. I’m pretty sure they felt bad for me. That they knew I was the three girls’ next victim. Well at least I did. I did feel bad for myself for falling into their trick.
I just looked down as tears dropped and soaked my book.
