The Myth of the Salty SeasBy: Ryan Song There are many legends in the world, from the ones concerning the birds of the blue sky, to the grainy soils of the earth. Yet how about the great seven seas, many myths lie in these waters, don’t they? About the great sea monsters and sunken ships, but how about the sea itself? For many years people have always wondered about it’s great mysteries but I have yet about one of them. Many hundreds years ago, When all the continents were one, there lived a man named Seayt. Seayt was not like many other men at that time, who were greedy and wanted unlimiting power for themselves. Even though Seayt was wealthy, he was an in everyway a great man. He was generous to those in need, and very popular with the children. Although you wouldn’t say Seayt was the happiest man alive. Even with these many good attributes, Seayt was awfully lonely. Yes…the children did love him, but he had never had real family or friends that he was especially close too. His father had died in war when he was still an energetic child and his mother dead when she had come down with a fatal sickness. Because of these reasons Seayt had always tried to help the people and become friends, but other villagers and men had despised him because of his riches. One day the magnificent king of Luna, far south of Seayt’s village, had asked Seayt to come work for him. The king also had request for Seayt to bring him some salt. “Why would he need salt?” Seayt pondered. Though Seayt would get the salt anyways, seeing that it would be a great honour to work for a king. But before Seayt went onto a life of nobility, he would give the village one more thing… Seayt had always known that half of the village had detested him from the beginning. So he thought, “I’ll try one more time!” Before Seayt left the village he gathered the residents to the village square. “I know many of you despise me for my riches and the fact that I will go work for royalty. So now, because of these reasons, I try one more time to turn your feelings toward me. I have left the front door of my house open, and when I leave to the land of Luna you may take whatever you wish.” The villagers went blank. You could guess that they were thinking, “Why would such a wealthy man do this for us?” Then they smiled, and soon started to cheer. With his leftover money, Seayt had ordered three dozen ships full of salt to be shipped to Luna. Soon after the ships had departed, he stood to go onboard his ferry. “Wait Seayt!” It was a voice that Seayt had found familiar. “Thank you Seayt, I have always known that you were a great man. It is good to know that many others think that too.” It was the Village Chief. “I’m glad, thank you for telling me.” And with that Seayt boarded his ferry onto his life of greatness. The journey was a long one. It had already been 2 days and Seayt and his loads had still not gone halfway. “Ahh…I never expected this journey to be sickening.” Seayt bloated feeling sick to his stomach. Seayt started walking over to the side of his boat, but saw another ship in the distance. Suddenly one of the ships beside Seayt boat exploded. “Pirates?! On an attack?” Seayt wondered while many heavy drops of water hit his head. And slowly one by one the 3 dozen vessels of salt sank to the bottom of the water’s floor. Finally only Seayt’s ship was left and the pirate ships sent a fury of cannonballs in his way. “I guess it ends here…” Seayt whimpered. With that, the last ship sank, taking Seayt to his watery grave. Later because of the people’s admiration for Seayt, Seayt home village named the great bodies of water Seas and this is why the sea’s waters are salty.
