Chapter 2
Danny awoke the next morning. Right before he opened his eyes, all the events of the day before hit him. It had such an impact that he felt his throat begin to tense and his eyes water beneath his eyelids. Biting his lower lip to prevent from crying aloud, a single lonely tear made its way down Danny’s cheek and hung on the tip of his chin until it drop to a silent splatter on his carpeted floor. His mind no longer functioned as it did; instead it was on auto-pilot. Danny got up from his slouched position and paid no attention to the aching pain in his back and neck. He made his way to the bathroom and swung open the door of the cabinet under his porcelain sink. There it was, lying under a small plastic basket. He reached for the bag and opened it, smelling the sweet intoxicating smell of marijuana. He went back into his room to get some paper and a lighter. As soon as he finished with that, he took a long drag and coughed it out. He had to repeat that a few times before his body got used to the drug again. He closed his eyes, expecting nothingness to come to mind. In the pitch black beneath his eyelids, he saw a flash, an image. Before he knew it, the image turned into a video and the same cycle last night repeated itself again. As the memories he had once cherished played back in his mind, he cursed God and threw his drug onto the carpeted floor.
With all the energy he could muster up at the moment, he got up and walked to the kitchen where he found a decent sized knife. He looked at it long and hard. How can a slab of metal, so thin make so much difference in people’s lives? Before he could think anymore, he dug the thin, razor-sharp knife into his left wrist. For a second, nothing happened. There was no blood, no pain, and he didn’t feel anything. But soon, he saw the think red blood oozing out of the wound slowly. Suddenly, he felt a sharp pain in his left wrist.
“F.uck!” He yelled as the knife he was holding dropped to the marble floor with a clanging sound.
The pain increased as blood started to seep out with more speed. Soon, blood was pouring out of his wrist rapidly and he felt the sharp pain of an open wound. As a puddle of blood began to form around him, his vision became distorted and he lost consciousness.
Danny awoke feeling a soft bed and covers on him. Although he kept his eyes closed, he knew by the feel and smell that this was not his room. He felt comfortable so he knew he didn’t die. If he died, he would be in Hell. This is obviously not Hell so he didn’t die.
When he lifted his eye lids, the first thing he saw was white. He realized that his face was in a pillow and he lifted his head slightly out of it. The first thing he saw was a long metal pole with a machine and a few IVs attached to it. He was in a hospital. That meant that someone had saved him, which meant that someone had to have checked up on him. Could it have been Eugene? As soon as he thought of that name, his heart turned into stone. His eyes became ice and formed into a hostile glare immediately. He sat glaring at the ceiling as if there were something evil living up there.
A gentle closing of a door made Danny turn his head towards the direction of the noise. He saw a middle aged man with a small balding spot on the center of his head. He had wire rimmed glasses that made him look intelligent and sophisticated. He was wearing a long knee-length white lab coat that went over his khakis. He was holding a clip board in one hand and a pen in the other as he walked over to Danny’s bed.
“Im TaeBin.” He said aloud to no one in particular.
“It’s Danny,” was Danny’s short but commanding response.
“Alright, so your neighbors found you in your kitchen after you committed suicide. You’re lucky that they found you early, if they had found you ten minutes later, you would have been dead.” The doctor stated casually as if he had to repeat those lines ten times a day.
“Go away” Danny said, “Leave me alone.”
The doctor didn’t even bother to look twice at Danny before leaving the room. Danny sat up and looked around. Next to him was another patient that seemed to be asleep at the moment. He got up from the bed and his bare foot touched the cold and hard floor as he made his way over to the patient’s bed. He picked up a card from a desk and it read:
Dear Brian Joo,
Please wake up and get well soon. We all love you very much, please stay strong. If you ever need anything from us when you wake up just let us know. Get well!
Love,
The Shin Family
The card had a little picture of a teddy bear holding on to balloons. Danny looked over at his own desk and saw that it was empty. Suddenly, he had an urge to shred the card into many piece and burn it. He resisted that urge and placed the card back where he found it. He walked slowly past his IV pole and back into his warm bed. He fell asleep silently cursing his nosy neighbors and God.
